About the Swedish Equestrian Federation
Equestrian sport is one of the main sports in Sweden, and one of the largest sports among young people. Equestrian sport is second only to football! Around 150 000 people are members of the Swedish Equestrian Federation.
With a population of only 9 million people, Sweden manage to have top riders in all disciplines and also breed top horses.
Around 900 riding clubs are affiliated to the federation. Half of them, 450, have a riding school open to anyone in the public who wants to take riding lessons.
Most of the pupils ride once or twice a week and 12 000 horses and ponies has a riding school as their place of work.
The most common name for a riding school pony is Diana.
The riding instructors are taught at the national riding school at Strömsholm, 100 kilometers outside Stockholm, which is also home to the Swedish federation.
The first equestrian body in Sweden was founded in 1912 in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Stockholm.
In 1993 four equestrian organisations merged in to the Swedish Equestrian Federation.
